Welcome to Greenstone Photography! My name is Dennis Strassburg, and I call central Minnesota my home. By day I am a machinery appraiser and environmental inspector. Most other times you will see me with a camera in my hands.
Two of my greatest passions are geology and photography. Living in Minnesota gives me the opportunity to pursue both. The wealth of glacial landforms, minerals, waterways, and different ecosystems make this place very special. It’s pretty nice for taking pictures too.
Photography became a major part of my life during my first year of college in Ely, Minnesota. The Boundary Waters area has limitless opportunities for photographic subjects, and I grew to admire the work of local photographer Jim Brandenburg. From there, I became Photo Editor for a college newspaper, Bemidji State’s Northern Student. It was here that I first learned the craft of the darkroom and figured out the technical aspects of photography. It was also my introduction to digital photography, as the first wave of digital cameras were hitting the market.
Since college I have totally converted to digital photography (although I am planning a dark room in my basement). Nature photography is my first love, but I have been working to advance my event, portrait, and street photography skills. I have shot a couple weddings, with more booked in the near future. I enjoy the challenge and emotions of this type of photography, and hope to pursue it further.
This site has been a goal of mine for quite some time. As my passion in photography grew, I searched for a way to share my creations. I hope this site succeeds in conveying this passion and how I see the world.
I guess in the end it boils down to the fact I have a ferocious appetite for all things related to photography; from animals and landscapes, big to small, people and events. I continue to strive and learn all I can, making my photographs better not just in a technical sense, but in an artistic way as well.
